It had been about ten in the morning when they reached Shreveport. Daniel had ridden along with them so he could take their wagon back after theyâd departed on the stagecoach.
Bobby Joe had fallen into silence after theyâd reached the house, and Susannah had been grateful to have Daniel to talk to on the way to Shreveport. But now, on the stage, it was just the two of themâexcept for one other passenger, an elderly man. Bobby had taken a little time to dress in a clean chambray shirt, a brown coat, and dark blue cotton pants. Susannah still wore the yellow calico dress that sheâd thrown on at Patienceâs house, and she knew that her red hair must look a fright. Sheâd pulled it back in a ponytail, and a crooked one at that. It wasnât fair that Bobby looked sharp and neat, when she must look like a pauper.
She sighed, then pulled up the dusty shade to look out the window. This was not going to be a pleasant trip. If Bobby continued to ignore her, she would just go nuts! There had to be something she could say. . .something she could do.
Suddenly she realized what sheâd forgotten to doâshe hadnât prayed. Sheâd been trying to sort out the whole mess by herself and hadnât stopped to ask God for guidance.
She closed her eyes and silently prayed, asking God to show her how to handle the situation. She asked Him for forgiveness for holding the secret back from her husbandâand that her husband would forgive her, also. And she thanked Him for bringing Bobby and Beth into her life.
Only God could give her the answers. Only He could help her.
Feeling much better, she turned away from the window and stared straight ahead. Out of the corner of her eye she saw that Bobby was looking at her, so she turned toward him. He was giving her a strange, probing look.
âWhatâs wrong?â she asked warily,
He shook his head. âI was wondering what you were doing with your eyes closed.â
She shrugged. âJust praying.â
âAbout what?â
âThat you would forgive me,â she said bluntly, staring straight into his eyes.
âI forgive you, then. Isnât that what the Bible tells us to do?â he shot back at her, with no hint of forgiveness in his voice.
âBut you donât want to be married to me anymore. Doesnât the Bible say something about that, too?â
âIt was never a real marriage, and I donât want to discuss this.â He turned away from her hurt expression and looked across the coach. She followed his gaze and noticed that the man across from them was staring at them with interest.
âI say, old man,â he beganâhis accent was that of the British upperclass. âDo you mean youâre planning to divorce this woman?â
Bobby scowled. âI donât see how thatâs any of your business.â
âYes, he is!â Susannah added quickly. âHe wonât for-give me.â
âWhat did you do, my dear?â he asked sympathetically.
âSusannah!â Bobby scolded.
But she ignored his protest. âI kept a secret from him.
